Spoonman Cutting Boards
Leather Knife Bags

I have worked at a nice restaurant in downtown Saint Paul for seven years now and have become good friends with a number of cooks and chefs. In the course of watching them work, I've noticed that many of them have similar generic black nylon knife bags that often seem to be breaking down, sometimes catastrophically, and usually have either too much or not enough space for that particular cook and the amount of gear they like to carry, which can vary pretty widely. At the time, I had recently gotten into leatherworking, and we started throwing around the idea of a custom leather knife bag, and many of the cooks I talked to were excited about the prospect, so I decided I would give it a go.

I looked around and there are a few people out there making leather knife bags, but none locally here, and none with a high level of customization available. I was pretty confident that we (Mr. & Mrs. Spoonman) could come up with something that was not only superior in functionality to the standard black nylon knife bag, but far more durable - something with personal touches that a cook can be proud to carry their gear in for years and years to come. So we got to work on a prototype...

I am not a person who cuts corners (okay, I'm a bit of a perfectionist), and the last thing I wanted was to do a mediocre job by using the wrong materials or techniques, so it took about a year of researching and developing before I was confident that we'd have a product that would meet our very high standards, a product we'd be proud to market and stand behind.  Well, I am extremely proud to say our first bag has arrived! It's for a Cubs fan, so this won't be our "standard offering", but I think it's a pretty good example of the customization we're capable of.

We anticipate having a "Prix Fixe" bag either in stock or always quickly available: dark brown leather, natural canvas, nickel plated hardware, three-stage copper rivets, double zipper pouch, machine sewn with light brown thread. We will also offer "A la carte" options for virtually unlimited customization of colors, materials, bag sizes, logos, and fabric themes. Prix Fixe bags will come with standard "initials" monogramming (if you choose) so that no two bags need ever be the same, but we'd love to work with you to create a knife bag that will be uniquely yours and showcase your knives and your personality.
